Consul-General

Consul General
Dame Barbara Hay
Dame Barbara Hay has enjoyed a wealth of experience within the diplomatic framework, and we are honored to have her here in Los Angeles. Most recently she was the British Consul General in Istanbul (2004-2009), and her previous appointments included the roles of Consul-General in St Petersburg (2000-04) and British Ambassador in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan (1995-99).

Dame Barbara joined the Diplomatic Service in 1971 and has spent much of her overseas career in the former Soviet Union, serving twice in Moscow (1975-77 and 1998-91) as well as in St Petersburg. She also worked in Johannesburg for three years (1978-80) and had her first taste of frontline commercial work in Montreal (1985-87). A spell in the Joint Assistance Unit (Central Europe), a joint ODA (now DFID)/FCO department, in the early 1990's involved Dame Barbara's technical assistance with programs to support economic and political reform in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe as they emerged from the upheavals of the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Please mark your diary and plan to join us on Wednesday, August 5!
